Installing ADSL Microfilters
If you are installing your broadband modem or router yourself, then you need to fit an ADSL filter to every telephone outlet where a telephone is connected. Whilst there is no practical limit to the number of filters that can be connected to a phone line, we recommend a maximum of four filters. Remember that it is possible to attach a 'phone-doubler' adapter to a filter in order to attach two telephone handsets. However it is important to note that not filtering one telephone device will affect other devices and this may stop all the other filters working correctly.
As an example here is a checklist for a typical internet household:
Number of telephone handsets 3
Fax machine 1
Dial-up modem 1
Sky "set-top-box" receiver 1
Total Filters 6
In this scenario, six filters are needed to complete the job. Missing the filter from the Sky receiver would most likely stop the other filters working correctly.

Installing your ADSL Filters
Connect the filters as follows:
- Disconnect the phone / equipment from the wall socket
- Connect the 'tail' of the ADSL Filter into the wall socket
- Re-connect the line cord from your phone, fax or satellite receiver to the ADSL Filter socket marked PHONE
- Plug your ADSL device into the socket marked ADSL MODEM
- Repeat this procedure for your other phones, fax machines, dial-up modems and satellite receivers
- NOTE: Unused telephone outlets do not need an ADSL Filter installed. All telephone devices must have an ADSL filter installed for other filters to operate correctly. Only ADSL device can be plugged into the line at anyone time.
